How Eyes Reveal Your Real Age?

Why Eye Treatment and Eye Cream is Essential?

Some clients and friends who are not using eye cream as it seems they do not understand the importance of using eye cream. I feel compelled to talk about the physiology of our eye contour. Let's start talking about that, shall we?

Some Facts about the Skin around Our Eyes

With more than 10,000 beats per day, 22 muscles and 14 actions every 10 seconds, the eye contour is the most active area of our face and it accentuates fine lines and wrinkles.

The skin thickness of our eye contour is only 0.55mm while the thickness of skin elsewhere is around 1.75-2.5mm. Therefore, the skin around the eyes is extremely thin and fragile.

The skin of our eye contour is composed of minimal sweat glands, sebaceous glands and collagen, thus representing the first area of the face to show signs of aging.

Common Problems Seen in Eye Contour

As we naturally age, our skin is thinner as a result of the loss of collagen and elastin. Thinned, translucent skin allows bluish veins to become more visible. At the same time, fine lines & wrinkles also become more visible.

Puffiness and dark circles are the result of poor microcirculation around the eyes caused by congestion of blood and lymphatic capillaries. When the blood circulates poorly, it stagnates and accumulates in the blood capillaries which become visible through the thin eye contour area.

Fragile capillaries can cause hemoglobin pigments to appear in the dermis and epidermis. An oxidized hemoglobin pigment has a blue undertone that intensifies the appearance of dark circles.

Poor lymphatic microcirculation causes a localized accumulation of water and lymph resulting in the appearance of bags under the eyes.

Hyperpigmentation is the result of too much melanin, which causes skin darkening. Due to heredity or ethnic background, pigmentation irregularities are one of the causes of dark circles. These are a particular concern for people of color, especially blacks and Asians. Over exposure to the sun can also stimulate the melanin production.
